Pacific Palisades is where the ocean and mountains meet. This landscape of the California dream is divided into 14 distinct locales, each with its singular charm, from rugged, coast-facing Rustic Canyon at the southern tip, to Sunset Mesa at the northern end, a plateau carved into the cliffside, its residential serenity is unmarred by through-streets (there are none) or visible utility-lines (they are in the ground).

Surf breaks at its western edge, and fiercely protected state parks and wilderness areas form the other boundaries. The refreshing elevation of the grassy bluffs affords a red tail hawk’s-eye view of downtown Los Angeles and the glittering waves below.

The Palisades area is home to the historic Will Rogers State Historic Park, which includes the last polo club in Los Angeles. Walkers, hikers, on-leash dogs and equestrian enthusiasts all enjoy the astonishing view from the peak at Inspiration Point Loop Trail, a 2.1 mile trek lined with wildflowers.

Running from the PCH to the spot where three lush parks converge, four adjacent properties lining Chautauqua Boulevard and overlooking the Pacific represent some of the most architecturally significant mid-century modern homes in America, and were built as part of the Arts & Architecture Magazine Case Study House Program:

Case Study House #8, Eames House, Charles and Ray Eames (1949), Case Study House #9, Entenza House, Charles Eames, Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen (1950), Case Study House #18, West House, Rodney A. Walker (1948), and Case Study House #20, Bailey House, Richard Neutra (1948).

These landmark modernist architecturals, three of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are just another clue to the sophistication that lies beneath the unpretentious vibe of the Palisades, beginning with the Getty Villa museum, home to the fabled family’s collection of 44,000 world-class Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities.

The Pacific Palisades Historical Society actively teaches and preserves the area’s legacy, and is a dynamic force in the community.
